A. The problem of learning languages is very important today. Foreign languages are socially demanded especially at the present time when the progress in science and technology has led to an explosion of knowledge and has contributed to an overflow of information. The total knowledge of mankind is known to double every seven years. Foreign languages are needed as the main and the most efficient means of information exchange of the peoples.

B. Today English is the language of the world. Over 300 million people speak it as a mother tongue. The native speakers of English live in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America. English is one of the official languages in the Irish Republic, Canada, the South African Republic. As a second language it is used in the former British and US colonies.

C. English is not only the national or official language of some thirty states which represent different cultures, but it is also the major international language for communication in such areas as science, technology, business and mass entertainment. English is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organization and other political organizations. It is the language of literature, education, modem music, international tourism.

D. What did the Norman Conquest do to England? It gave it French kings and nobles who brought with them the French language. After the Norman Conquest there were three languages in England. There was Latin, the language of the church in which all learned men wrote and spoke. Then there was French, the language which the kings and nobles spoke and wrote. Finally, there was the English language which remained the language of poor people who did not understand French or Latin but spoke only English.

E. So far there is no universal or ideal method of learning languages. Everybody has his own way. Sometimes it is boring to study grammar or to learn new words. But it is well known that reading original books in English, listening to the BBC news, communicating with the English speaking people will help a lot. When learning a foreign language you learn the culture and history of native speakers.

F. The conquest of England by the Normans began in 1066 with the battle of Hastings, where the English fought against the Normans. The conquest was complete in 1086. Who were these Normans who conquered England? They were Vikings or 'Norsemen', men from the North. Some 150 years before the conquest of England they came to a part of France, opposite England, a part which we now call Normandy.

G. The beginning of 1600th was the English colonization of North America and the creation of an American dialect. Some pronunciations and usages didn’t change when they reached the American shore. In certain respects, American English is closer to the English of Shakespeare than modem British English is. Some "Americanisms" are actually originally British expressions that were preserved in the colonies while lost at home (e.g., fall as a synonym for autumn, trash for rubbish, loan as a verb instead of lend).

A constitution may be defined as the system of fundamental principles according to A ______. A good example of a written constitution is the Constitution of the United States, formed in 1787. The Constitution sets up a federal system with a strong central government. Der erste Orden Russlands, der Andreas-Orden, wurde 1698 von PeterI. gestiftet. Zu dem Orden gehören ein Stern mit der Devise ”Für Treue und Glauben”, eine goldene Kette, die aus Staatswappen und Kreuzen besteht, sowie ein hellblaues Moireband. Erster Ritter dieses Ordens war Feldmarschall Golowin; als sechster erhielt PeterI. 1703 den Andreas-Orden dafür, dass er in der Mündung der Newa zwei schwedische Schiffe aufgebracht hatte. Mit dem Andreas-Orden würdigte man die herausragenden russischen Truppenführer Suworow, Rumjanzew, Kutusow u.a.

Der 1725 von PeterI. erdachte Alexander-Newski-Orden wurde nach seinem Tode von KatharinaI. gestiftet. Er trägt das Motto ”Für Dienst und Vaterland”; mit diesem Orden zeichnete man sowohl Militärs als auch Zivilisten aus.

1735 wurde in Holstein der vierklassige Orden der Heiligen Anna gestiftet, den man 1797 in das russische Ordensstatus übernahm. Die Devise des Ordens lautet: ”Dem Wahrheitsliebenden, Freund der Frömmigkeit und Treue”. Den Orden erster Klasse trug man auf einer breiten Scharpe, der zweiten Klasse - am Hals, der dritten Klasse - im Knopfloch, der vierten - am Knauf einer Ehrenwaffe. Er hatte die Aufschrift “Für Tapferkeit” und wurde nur an Armeeangehörige verliehen.

Die höchste Militärauszeichnung war der vierklassige Georgs-Orden, den Katharina II. 1769 einführte; es handelt sich um ein weiβemailliertes Goldkreuz mit der Darstellung des Heiligen Georg; dazu gehört ein Stern mit der Devise: ”Für treue Dienst und Tapferkeit”. Mit dem ersten Georgs - Orden zeichnete

Katharina sich selbst aus. Während der knapp 150 Jahre, die zwischen seiner Stiftung und dem Umsturz von 1917 lagen, wurden 25 Personen mit dem Georgs-Orden erster Klasse dekoriert, darunter der Feldmarschall Rumjanzew, der Fürst Potjemkin sowie die groβen russischen Heerführer Suworow und Kutusow.

Neben dem Orden des”Heiligen Georgs” sehen wir auf einem gestreiften Band das Georgskreuz. Hierbei handelt es sich nicht um einen Orden, sondern um ein militärisches Ehrenzeichen, das 1807 in einer Klasse eingeführt wurde; 1856 wandelte man das Georgskreuz in eine vierklassige Auszeichnung um. Die Kreuze erster und zweiter Klasse waren aus Gold, der dritten und vierten aus Silber. Ein mit diesem Kreuz belobigter Soldat unterlag in der Armee keinen körperlichen Züchtigungen mehr. Während des Ersten Weltkrieges würdigte man persönliche Tapferkeit von Offizieren mit dem Georgskreuz.

1782 wurde der Orden der “Heilige Wladimir”, ein goldenes Kreuz mit roter Emaillierung und schwarzem Rand, in vier Klassen eingeführt. Ausgezeichnet wurden hiermit militärische und zivile Leistungen sowie langjährige Staatsdienst. Die Devise des Wladimir-Ordens lautete ”Nutzen, Ehren, Ruhm”.

Der “Weiβe Adler” auf blauem Band und der “Heilige Stanislaw” auf rotweiβem Band gingen 1831 in das Ordensstatus ein. Vor 1917 wurden lediglich Angehörige des Militärs, des Zarenhofes, Staatsdiener und die Geistlichkeit mit Orden bedacht. Bauern und Kleinbürgern verlieh man keine Orden.

In der Weltgeschichte der Ehrenzeichen kommt dem 1714 von Peter I.

etablierten Katharinen-Orden eine Sonderstellung zu. Hierbei handelt es sich um einen Orden für Frauen, den Peter zum Gedenken an den Türkischen Feldzug von 1711 gründete. Mit dem ersten Orden dekorierte er seine Gemahlin Katharina.
